Blog admin – Likes

Basic admin post. After picking up about 10 spam comment likes from usernames all pointing to porn sites (from a bot I suspect as they were within minutes of each other) I’ve finally and reluctantly put the time into disabling Comment likes and switching off a whole bunch of other Like functionality. Next up is seeing if I can delete those comments. Apologies if you tend to use the like button on my blog.

update – switching off the ability to Like comments has made them all disappear. Apologies to anyone who’s received notification of a Like on their comment from a dodgy source.

That’s fair enough and a good idea. My spam filter seems to be working fairly well up to now but I’m intending not to have a ‘like’ widget on my next blog.

My spam filter is pretty good too, but WordPress seems to be rather less rigorous about comment likes from usernames along the lines of http://www.sexyrandomletters.whatever and I just lost it a bit when I clicked on the little notification bell and got a whole screenful of them.

I did wonder when I saw a notification of a like. It is a bit of a pain when it happens. I didn’t get too much of it on my everyday blog, which was also wordpress, but will have to keep an eye out for it.

It looks like there was a major campaign over the Easter weekend, WordPress support directed me to a two page thread of people with exactly the same problem. Hopefully my site’s more secure now.

It looks like it was a significant campaign on the WordPress platform over the Easter weekend. I’m pretty peeved really, I accept clearing up spam that’s meant for my site but targeting people who commented is pretty low. Though I suppose normal standards don’t apply to spam. I suppose as well that it’s not really in WordPress’ interest to minimise traffic, whether legitimate or not.
